A skill that I find is so important to teach in those early days postnatal as it’s such a common struggle! As always, @katiejameslactation does a wonderful job as explaining! Posted @withregram • @katiejameslactation Engorged? Baby struggling to latch? Let’s talk about a simple technique that can help — fast. In those early days when milk first comes in, the breasts can feel like overfilled balloons — firm, hot, and almost impossible for baby to get a good mouthful of. 💡 Reverse Pressure Softening is a gentle trick to help. It shifts some swelling away from the areola so it’s softer and more flexible — making it easier for baby to latch deeply and drain the breast well. How to do it? ✨ Use clean fingers to apply gentle inward pressure around the base of your nipple — hold for a few long steady, calming breaths. ✨ Think of it as moving fluid back, not squeezing milk out. ✨ It only takes a couple of minutes and can make all the difference. This little skill is gold when you’re engorged, baby can’t latch properly, or you’re feeling rock hard and desperate for relief. 🌿 Breastfeeding doesn’t need to be more painful than it already is. But covering their car seat with a “breathable” cover might not be as safe as it seems. 🌡️ When we cover a car seat or stroller, we trap heat inside. And babies can heat up quickly. At around 104°F, their body starts to struggle. By 107°F, the risk of heatstroke becomes very real. The good news? There are simple, safe ways to keep your baby cool: ✅ Keep them out of direct sunlight ✅ Dress them in lightweight clothes ✅ Use sunscreen when it’s age-appropriate ✅ Add a stroller fan (outside the car only!) ✅ Take them out of their seat as soon as you can 👶 Your baby’s comfort and safety come first. FYI in this (glorious!) hot weather: Posted @withregram • @thebreastfeedingnetworkuk Today’s Saturday Share comes from @1stepsnutritiontrust The warmer weather seems to be sticking with us for a while, so here’s some information on keeping your breastfed and formula-fed babies hydrated! Breastfed babies under 6 months old don’t need extra water. Your breastmilk water content changes with your baby’s needs. Formula-fed babies under 6 months may be given small sips of water between milk feeds. Tap water (even filtered) must be boiled and cooled first. Bottled water may be inappropriate due to high sodium levels. From 6 months water can be given to breastfed and bottle-fed babies, and tap water no longer needs to be boiled. The number of wet nappies is a good indication of how hydrated your baby is. Breastfed babies 0-6 months. No extra water is needed for exclusively breastfed babies until solids are introduced. During hot weather breastfeed often to quench your baby’s thirst. Formula fed babies 0-6 months. May need amounts of extra water during hot weather. Tap water is not sterile. It needs to be boiled and cooled first. Bottles water may be inappropriate due to high sodium and sulphate levels. filtered water can be given to babies under 6 months, but still needs to be boiled and cooled. How much? There is no specific guidance on how much extra water to give babies 0-6 months when it’s hot. If needed, give small sips in between milk feeds. Generally, a well hydrated baby produces about 6 wet nappies every 24 hours. What about babies 6-12 months?Water can be given from an open cup or beaker as mealtimes from 6 months, and tap water no longer needs to be boiled. young children aged 1-5 years do not need any drinks other than milk and water.
